Recently, Nick and I upgraded our bed in our master bedroom to a king size bed. Nick is on the taller side and the cats both sleep in our bed with us so he was beginning to feel like we needed more room. I was all for the idea! We already knew which mattress we wanted. We got a purple mattress a few years ago and both of us love it so it was a no-brainer to get another. With this new project underway, I set out to figure out just how to style a king size bed. It was so much fun however different than dressing a queen size bed so I thought I would share.
With more room comes more pillows. Sorry to all the husbands out there who hate how many pillows their wives have everywhere but thats just how its done. If you want a big, cozy, fluffy bed… you have to have enough pillows!! I always opt to make beds look this way. It gives the space a more inviting, comfortable feel. I will get into how to make your space more inviting and comfortable in future posts. Rule #1 though: Make sure if its a wall, flooring, a bed frame (in this case) you fill your piece appropriately.
New sheets with a bigger sized bed are a given but something I didn’t think about at first is: you need king size pillows to fill out your bed from side to side. Standard size pillows no longer cut it. Luckily, I have a hack for this if you are upgrading but still have a favorite pillow. Nick and I both have specific, special pillows we sleep with. His happens to be a purple pillow which he really likes and mine is actually his old pillow which I don’t know anything about but it works a lot better for me than the 20-year-old, paper thin pillow I had since I was a kid and wouldn’t ever replace. These pillows are both standard size and we still use them with our new king size bed. Where are these pillows in the pictures you ask? Under the decorative pillows, hidden under the covers, ready for sleeping. This actually works out to give the decorative pillows more height to them, in turn making the bed look fuller. On top of the bed I have it dressed with 3 Euro-Size 26×26 pillows to line the back of the bed, then 2 King size pillows with shams on them, followed by a bunch of 20×20 decorative pillows arranged to your liking depending on the look you are going for, the holidays, etc.
Next order of business is bedding. Nick and I have come to the conclusion that neither of us like comforters because it gets too hot during the night but rather we like quilts. I made the switch to a quilt years ago and I sleep so much better. I have a bed blanket underneath in case it gets a little chilly but topped with a quilt and I am good to go. Now for color scheme, I LOVE a good all white bed. Nothing beats it. It just makes your space feel so luxurious. I have had primarily white bedding for years and years. Sometimes I switch it up but I always go back. It is clean, crisp, and goes with everything. I never really worry about getting it dirty. I even sleep with my pets and its very durable in my opinion. If you are a clean person I wouldn’t really let the fact that its white and could get dirty deter you. Now, white towels on the other hand? Don’t even get me started. I recently switched to white and I am still very much afraid and adjusting but my friend from Elementary School said she has white and oxi-clean is her best friend. I went out and got some. So far so good lol. (Back to bedding.) When I was searching, I wanted something more upscale, fabric is important when picking your bedding. A good resource to start and the place where I got my quilt & shams is Pottery Barn. This whole bed is pretty much dressed from Pottery Barn. I will have all details linked below in case you are curious but I am really loving the quality. With the holidays coming up, these are some great things to put on your gift list. It really levels up your sleeping experience. Another good place for sheets & pillow inserts is Macy’s. Especially right now, they have some great deals for Early Black Friday. My king size pillows are currently on sale a set of two for $14.99!! Such a good deal!
With a white base for your bedding you really can take the color scheme anywhere. I wanted to add warmth to the bed because our walls are painted with a more cool toned color so I opted for shades of cream, linen, and added a pop of green which I am obsessed with. I love the way the rich green compliments all the different colors in my space. It really is such a beautiful color without being too loud & in your face. Colors, shades, and tones really affect the energy of a space. If you want a space thats calm and relaxing opt for shades of colors that reflect that. We both love the bed so much and I hope this was helpful. I hope you are able to take away some things as you are learning how to style your king size bed. Wishing you all the best and talk to you soon.
Enjoy some pictures of Minnie! 🙂
